The National Park Service re-opened trails in the Sunfish Pond area of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which means Appalachian Trail thru-hikers can move through unimpeded.

An Aug. 8 wildfire blamed on an illegal campsite blaze caused as many as 250 acres of forest to burn around Sunfish Pond, a popular glacial lake on top of Kittatinny Ridge in New Jersey. The fire closed the Appalachian Trail, a backpacker’s campsite and two side trails — Kaiser Trail and Coppermine Trail.

All trails are now open.

One of the things I love about the US are the national parks. Such big open spaces. It is a shame that these spaces are prone to fires. Glad to hear the trails are now back open.
