We have a long way before winter's done. (evilerin / flickr) http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilerin/ / CC BY 2.0
Sometimes, when you’re putting together a playlist for your road trip, you should remember to save some tunes for the return trip.
This job and lifestyle requires time away from Mrs. Compass Points, and I’d have to say the hardest part of this job isn’t the grammar, the rewrites, the trolling for story ideas but the distance away. Forgive me for a little sentimentality, but if you’re married and a backpacker, you know what I’m talking about.
I reference earlier this week a trip I took during a vicious winter storm in New Hampshire. While I lay on my back for hours staring up at the darkness listening to the sleet incessantly tap at my single-wall tent, what got me through the night was thinking about – of all things – going to Target and sipping lattes with Mrs. Compass Points. Honest. Don’t know why that particular image, but I knew if I could get back to her and (I laugh to type this) go to Target, everything would be alright.
So I have a “Comin’ Home” playlist that includes a little Ray LaMontagne, the Stephen Stills-inspired songwriter from New Hampshire. Two-for-one deal on this one. LaMontagne performs “Shelter” and “Hold You In My Arms.”
