Yeah, this Neil Young song might be about a club that wouldn’t let anyone older than 21 enter (and not an actual mountain), but we can pretend, can’t we? There are plenty of mountains with the word “sugar” in their names.
The song “Sugar Mountain” is as much about lost innocence and lost youth as anything else. Young released it in 1969 as a B-side, but “Sugar Mountain” didn’t appear on an album until 1977. When I first started listening to Neil Young’s music, this one didn’t strike me like others, but as I get older the more I like it and the more relevant it becomes.
“Sugar Mountain” gets this week’s TRAIL TUNES honor since Maryland’s Sugarloaf Mountain will appear shortly as a DAY TRIPPER and in a Compass Points TV teaser.
