Quirky backpacking gear

We’re digging out of nearly two feet of snow here that fell during the weekend at Base Camp, and that means lots of time to finish my basement man cave! Photos to come soon as this man cave has a hiking/adventure travel theme, and I’m contemplating a Compass Points TV special episode. I’m no interior designer, but this place is looking stellar.

But I’m not too busy assembling IKEA furniture with an array of allen wrenches to throw this one from RoanokeOutside.com‘s Ryan Dionne out there. He returned from the annual gear blowout that’s the Outdoor Retailer trade show earlier this month to report:

Here’s a “Top Five” list of gear that’s a little peculiar, but caught my eye as having potential in the outdoors world. Most of it will be available in the fall, so yes, this preview is a tease for all of you who want the gear now. But some of it is worth the wait.

I’m a little confused about the half-sleeve 800-fill down jacket. Read that sentence again. If you’re in conditions where you need to wear a goose down jacket, what are you doing exposing those forearms?.

Worth a read. Got an odd piece of gear you hike with or have seen on display at an outfitter? Tell us about it in the comments section.
