When I started Compass Points Media in October 2009, I never imagined how CPM would lead me to an amazing network of loyal readers, adventure bloggers and more. I give thanks for that every day. I also never imagined how time consuming the creation of a digital media company could be, especially when I recently found a job as news editor of a local television station’s website and I landed feature stories in a couple of magazines.
I admit that during August postings at Compass Points Media have come at a slower rate than previously, but that’s because of other obligations. Frankly, this last month has given me great fulfillment as a freelance writer and a media professional, but it’s also been exhausting … in a good way.
And this time gave me an opportunity to consider the direction I’d like to see Compass Points Media follow to greater success.
I’m working in conjunction with a close friend to create a entertaining blog for 2011, something we think will help readers (and its writers) discover wilderness while living modern lives. We suspect there are thousands, maybe millions, of people working careers and raising families who don’t go hiking, kayaking, climbing or just get outside as much as they would like. I don’t either, I’m ashamed to admit.
This blog, as of now untitled, will help all of us find wilderness.
Other changes are coming, too. Check out the new day hiking guides, called Day Hiker, where CPM provides route and waypoint information for some of the best single-day experiences. You can now download GPX files to your own GPS plus view where you’re heading on Google Earth. CPM has revamped Old Rag in Virginia and Pulpit Rock and The Pinnacle in Pennsylvania so far, and CPM will be working during the coming weeks to complete our entire collection and add some more.
Backcountry Radio and Compass Points TV will go on as well. And who knows, maybe you’ll see a new Trail Blazes in the future.
Time for introspection is passing. The time to get to work is here. Find your direction!

Congratulations Dave on the new job! Don’t be too upset about not getting out like you would want to. Most of us need to work to support our “outdoor habit”. Working shifts that rotate each week and getting one “long weekend” a month (with a couple of off days in between) along with family duties, etc., I truly wish I could get get out more. Again, best of luck and I hope you have a great weekend.
